Brand Project: Spirit Animal
I took a Packaging Design class my senior year at Notre Dame and Spirit Animal was my favorite project. I was tasked to work with a partner and come up with a new beverage concept and brand identity. We saw an opportunity in the alcohol industry to merge the class and flavor of iconic drinks with the ease and convenience of a typical canned beverages. (This was a new concept in 2019!)
Our design solution was Spirit Animal. After researching, we found some of the most iconic classic cocktails were sangria, the mojito and the Moscow mule. We were drawn to these three because of their unique origin stories and how they could lend themselves to the idea of a spirit animal. For example, we chose a bear for the Moscow mule because it originated in Russia and the country's animal is a bear.
For the packaging we wanted to create something that was unique for each flavor but still identified as a cohesive brand. This is why we kept the overall design of the can consistent but changed the color and illustrated animal. We wanted to push the box design so on each animal the eyes would be cut out to show the colored part of the can inside. We believed it added to the experience and would help the package stand out on the shelves.
